Overview
Tsavo East and Tsavo West National Parks together form one of the largest wildlife sanctuaries in the world, covering over 22,000 square kilometers in southeastern Kenya. Divided by the Nairobi-Mombasa highway, the two parks offer distinct but complementary safari experiences.
- Tsavo East is known for its open savannahs, large elephant herds, and the legendary “Man-Eaters of Tsavo”—the lions that gained fame during the construction of the railway in the late 1800s.
- Tsavo West features dramatic landscapes, including lava flows, volcanic craters, and the crystal-clear Mzima Springs, home to hippos and crocodiles.
Tsavo is less crowded compared to other parks, making it perfect for travelers seeking an off-the-beaten-path safari experience.

Wildlife
Tsavo is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including the Big Five (lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhino). The red elephants of Tsavo—coated in the park’s red volcanic soil—are an iconic sight. Other notable animals include giraffes, zebras, cheetahs, hippos, crocodiles, wild dogs, and oryx.
Birdwatchers will be delighted by over 600 bird species, including ostriches, kingfishers, hornbills, and secretary birds.
