Safari Overview

Your Journey

This nine-day great migration safari follows a classic Northern Tanzania route and ends where the herds face the Mara River. From Arusha it heads to Tarangire National Park, the Ngorongoro Crater, the Seronera area of the central Serengeti, and finally the northern Serengeti near Kogatende. Crossings there typically happen from July to October, so that's when to go. Nobody can promise a crossing, but this route puts you close to the crossing points for two nights.

You start at Ngare Sero Mountain Lodge with a welcome briefing and an afternoon coffee tasting on the slopes of Mount Meru. Next is Tarangire Sopa Lodge, for elephants along the Tarangire River and good birding. Two nights at Ngorongoro Kuhama Camp include a Maasai village visit on the way in and a full day on the crater floor, where flamingos gather at Lake Magadi and black rhino graze in the open.

Enkirari Wilderness Camp is your base for two nights in Seronera, where lions often rest on the kopjes and leopards use the riverine trees. Then you drive north to Savannah Mara River Camp for the last two nights. When the herds are crossing, you wait on the banks. When they aren't, the predators that follow them keep the game viewing busy. On day nine you fly from Kogatende back to Arusha, or take the long drive.

Our Arusha team can match your dates and camps to where the herds are likely to be.

Day 1

Arrival in Arusha

Arusha City

Your safari begins when your international flight lands at Kilimanjaro International Airport. After completing immigration, collecting your luggage, and clearing customs, your private driver will welcome you in the arrival lounge. You will then take a scenic one-hour drive west to Arusha, passing through sun-drenched plains, local towns, and Maasai pastures. On a clear day, you can view the snow-capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro or Mount Meru before checking into your Arusha hotel to rest. Your hotel is Ngare Sero Mountain Lodge, just outside Arusha. In the afternoon you visit a coffee plantation on the slopes of Mount Meru for a guided tasting. On a clear day you may also see Mount Kilimanjaro from here.

Arusha to Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park

The two-hour drive from Arusha to Tarangire National Park takes you from the bustling city into the heart of the Great Rift Valley. The smooth highway cuts through vast plains, passing vibrant Maasai villages where herders tend to livestock against distant blue hills. As the urban scenery fades, the tarmac gives way to a red-clay track signaling the start of your safari adventure. The landscape transforms to reveal massive ancient baobab trees and umbrella acacias, where giraffes and zebras often wander near the roadside before you reach the main gate. Inside the park you go straight into an afternoon game drive. The park's baobab trees stand over elephant herds that gather along the Tarangire River, especially in the dry season. You spend the night at Tarangire Sopa Lodge, with breakfast, lunch and dinner included.

Leaving Tarangire, the drive north along the Great Rift Valley highway leads to Mto wa Mbu, a culturally diverse town representing over 120 tribes. Here, a guided walking tour takes you through banana plantations and local markets to watch Makonde woodcarvers and see traditional banana beer brewing. After an authentic African buffet lunch on a local farm, you will climb the steep Rift Valley escarpment. The winding road offers panoramic views of Lake Manyara before entering the cool, fertile Karatu highlands. From there you continue up to Ngorongoro Kuhama Camp, a tented camp on the crater rim, arriving in time for sunset over the crater. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included, and this is the first of two nights here.

Once you cross the park boundary at Naabi Hill Gate, the landscape transforms into immense, tree-free plains. After a brief stop to check permits and view the endless horizon from the rocky hill, you will enjoy a game drive into the Seronera Valley, where flat plains give way to acacia woodlands and lion-inhabited granite kopjes. Good to Know

Great Migration Safari: Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to do this Great Migration safari?

July to October, when the migration herds typically reach the northern Serengeti and river crossings happen at the Mara River. There are no fixed departure dates, so ask us for dates, and our Arusha team will match them and the camps to where the herds are likely to be. Outside those months the north still has good game viewing, but crossings are unlikely.

Will we see a Mara River crossing?

No one can promise a crossing, because the herds decide when and where to cross. What this route does is put you close to the crossing points, with two nights at Savannah Mara River Camp near Kogatende. Thousands of wildebeest can gather on the banks before plunging in. When crossings are quiet, the predators drawn in by the herds keep the game viewing strong.

Where do we stay each night?

Five places. The first night is at Ngare Sero Mountain Lodge near Arusha, then one night at Tarangire Sopa Lodge. After that it's two nights each at Ngorongoro Kuhama Camp, a tented camp, Enkirari Wilderness Camp, a tented camp in the Seronera area, and Savannah Mara River Camp, a mobile camp in the northern Serengeti.

What happens on the first day in Arusha?

After you land at Kilimanjaro International Airport, we transfer you to Ngare Sero Mountain Lodge and your guide gives a welcome briefing on the days ahead. In the afternoon you visit a coffee plantation on the slopes of Mount Meru for a guided tasting. On a clear day you may also see Mount Kilimanjaro.

What can we expect in the Central Serengeti?

The Seronera area holds game year-round because of its permanent water. You spend a full day in the Seronera Valley, where lions often rest on the granite kopjes and leopards use the riverine trees. It's a good contrast to the migration herds further north, and your base for two nights is Enkirari Wilderness Camp.

What is the Ngorongoro Crater day like?

Day four is a full day of game viewing on the crater floor. Lion prides move through the grassland, black rhinos often graze in the open and flamingos gather on the shores of Lake Magadi. Animals stay in the crater year-round, so there's a lot to see in a compact area. You spend two nights at Ngorongoro Kuhama Camp.

How do we get back to Arusha from the northern Serengeti?

After an early morning game drive on the last day, you either take a bush flight from Kogatende airstrip back to Arusha or start the long drive. The flight is much faster and gives you views over the Serengeti plains and the Ngorongoro highlands. From Arusha you connect to your onward flight at Kilimanjaro International Airport.

What should I pack for a July to October safari in the Serengeti?

This is the dry season, so pack for dusty drives, warm days and cold early mornings, especially in the Ngorongoro highlands. Bring layers, a warm fleece, neutral-coloured clothing, a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses and binoculars. Use a soft duffel bag if you take the bush flight, as light aircraft have limited luggage space.
