Safari Overview

Your Journey

This is our classic Northern Circuit route and the 7 day Tanzania safari most first-time visitors ask about. It starts with two nights in Tarangire National Park, climbs to the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, and finishes in the central Serengeti around the Seronera Valley. You get full days in each place, and you won't face a long transfer every morning.

The first two nights are at Tarangire Sopa Lodge. Drives take you past baobabs, elephant herds on the Tarangire River and the Silale Swamps, and birders have plenty to look at. Heading north on day three, you stop in Mto wa Mbu for a local lunch, then climb through forest to Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge on the rim.

Day four is spent on the floor of the caldera. You pass the flamingos of Lake Magadi and search the open grassland for black rhino. Next you cross the highlands, enter the Serengeti at Naabi Hill Gate and drive across the short-grass plains to Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge for two nights. The full day there is about the big cats: lions on the kopjes, leopards in the sausage trees, cheetahs on the open plains. None of them can be promised, but Seronera gives you a good chance. On the last morning you game drive slowly to Seronera airstrip and fly to Arusha.

Our Arusha team can extend the route or swap lodges to suit you.

Day 1

Arusha to Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park

The two-hour drive from Arusha to Tarangire National Park takes you from the bustling city into the heart of the Great Rift Valley. The smooth highway cuts through vast plains, passing vibrant Maasai villages where herders tend to livestock against distant blue hills. As the urban scenery fades, the tarmac gives way to a red-clay track signaling the start of your safari adventure. The landscape transforms to reveal massive ancient baobab trees and umbrella acacias, where giraffes and zebras often wander near the roadside before you reach the main gate. After lunch there's an afternoon game drive through savannah, seasonal swamps and riverine woodland, with the elephants often gathered along the Tarangire River. You end the day at Tarangire Sopa Lodge as the sun goes down over the river. Lunch and dinner are included.

After an authentic African buffet lunch on a local farm, you will climb the steep Rift Valley escarpment. The winding road offers panoramic views of Lake Manyara before entering the cool, fertile Karatu highlands. From Karatu the road climbs on to Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge on the crater rim, where you get your first look down into the caldera and, on a clear evening, a sunset over it. Leaving the Ngorongoro highlands, the journey to the central Serengeti drops you from cool mountain forests onto the endless African savanna. The road winds down the dusty northern slopes through Maasai lands, passing young herders and the historic Olduvai Gorge. Once you cross the park boundary at Naabi Hill Gate, the landscape transforms into immense, tree-free plains. After a brief stop to check permits and view the endless horizon from the rocky hill, you will enjoy a game drive into the Seronera Valley, where flat plains give way to acacia woodlands and lion-inhabited granite kopjes. Tonight and tomorrow night are at Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included.

A full-day private game drive begins at first light to target active apex predators along the Seronera River loops. This reliable water source draws a constant stream of zebras, wildebeests, and waterbucks, while the surrounding Simba or Moru kopjes provide sunbathing spots for local lion prides. Enjoy a private bush lunch experience complete with cold drinks under a lone acacia tree. The afternoon shifts toward outer circuits, featuring a visit to the crowded Retima Hippo Pool and dedicated tracking for cheetahs in the open grasslands or leopards hidden in yellow-barked acacia trees. You spend a second night at Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge, with breakfast, lunch and dinner included.

Day 7

Serengeti to Arusha, Departure

Arusha City

After a last breakfast in the Serengeti, you game drive slowly to Seronera airstrip and fly back to Arusha. Your guide meets you on arrival. If you want time for shopping, there's an optional stop, then lunch at Cultural Heritage. After lunch you're driven to Kilimanjaro or Arusha airport for your flight home, so an evening departure works best. Use a soft bag for the light aircraft, since luggage space is limited. Breakfast and lunch are included on this last day.

Good to Know

7 Day - Classic Northern Circuit Safari: Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time of year for this Northern Circuit safari?

It works year-round, because Tarangire, the Ngorongoro Crater and the central Serengeti all hold resident wildlife. In the dry season, roughly June to October, Tarangire's elephants crowd the river and game viewing is easiest. The long rains of April and May bring green landscapes and fewer vehicles. There are no fixed departures, so ask us for dates.

What will I see in Tarangire National Park?

Tarangire is known for its old baobabs and large elephant herds along the Tarangire River. You spend two nights at Tarangire Sopa Lodge, with an afternoon drive on arrival and then a full day of morning and afternoon drives through savannah, seasonal swamps and riverine woodland, including the Silale Swamps. It's also a strong park for birdwatching.

What is the full day in the Ngorongoro Crater like?

You descend about 600 metres onto the floor of the volcanic caldera, home to all of the Big Five, and spend the day exploring it. You drive past Lake Magadi, where flamingos gather, and search the open grassland for the rare black rhino. The nights either side are at Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge on the crater rim.

Where do you stay in the Serengeti?

Two nights at Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge in the central Seronera Valley. You enter the park through Naabi Hill Gate with a game drive across the short-grass plains favoured by cheetahs, then have a full day of morning and afternoon drives looking for lions on the kopjes and leopards in the sausage trees.

Will I see the Great Migration on this safari?

It depends on when you travel. The central Serengeti is on this route for its resident big cats, which are there all year, while the migration herds move through different parts of the ecosystem across the seasons. If the herds are a priority, tell us your dates and our Arusha team will advise where they are likely to be and whether the route should change.

What is the stop at Mto wa Mbu?

On day three, on the drive from Tarangire to Ngorongoro, you stop in Mto wa Mbu, a lively village at the foot of the Rift Valley. It's one of Tanzania's most culturally mixed communities. You have a local lunch and a cultural walk, which gives you a look at everyday life between parks before the climb to the crater rim.

Where does the safari start and finish?

It starts in Arusha with a drive south-west to Tarangire. On the last morning you game drive to Seronera airstrip and fly back to Arusha. Your guide meets you there for optional shopping and lunch at Cultural Heritage, then drives you to Kilimanjaro or Arusha airport. An evening flight home works best.

What should I pack for this safari?

Neutral-coloured layers. Days are warm, but early mornings on the Ngorongoro rim are cold, so bring a fleece or light jacket. Add a hat, sunscreen, binoculars and a camera with a zoom lens. Use a soft duffel bag, as the flight from Seronera to Arusha is on a light aircraft with limited luggage space.
